How to Protect Your Eyes While Driving
Posted by: Mitchell Refractive Surgery & Eye Center
Many of us have been told regularly the importance of taking care of our eyes. Some of us follow the 20/20/20 rule where every 20 minutes you look at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is a great tip when you work indoors at a computer all day; however, if your “office” is outdoors or on the road the tips to help keep your eyes healthy are a bit different.
At Mitchell Refractive Surgery & Eye Center we have a few tips to help keep your eyes healthy for longer when your place of work is outside or on the go.
Wear Sunglasses
Being eye doctors in Boca Raton we know how much sunlight our great state gets. UV rays can damage your eyes resulting in vision loss that includes cataracts as well as more serious conditions like macular degeneration.
Sunglasses block 100% of UV rays and can really help your vision in the long run. We recommend always keeping an extra set handy, even if they’re just cheap ones from a gas station. The best type of sunglasses to wear are ones that wraparound and protect your eyes from multiple angles.
Avoid Sun Glare
Wearing sunglasses and utilizing your car’s sun visors can majorly help minimize glare when driving toward the sun or the sun is bouncing off of another car. Utilizing these tools that are readily available for you also helps you from having to squint as much and can save you on future botox injections!
Give Yourself Breaks Along the Way
Scheduling breaks or taking one when your eyes are starting to feel heavy or any type of strain is important not only for your safety, but those around you. Take turns driving with someone if you’re traveling with a coworker or friend or add a little extra downtime at your next rest stop.
Regular Eye Exams
Just with any other part of your body, regularly seeing your eye doctor is important for your overall eye health. Whether you’re looking for an eye doctor for an annual check up in the Boca Raton area or are wanting to consider Lasik eye surgery, or another type of eye surgery be sure to contact us.
